Third Edition Roman Missal

After six long years, it looks like the Third Edition of the Roman Missal is almost here!

Pope John Paul II issued the long awaited revision to the Order of the Mass (Missale Romanum) in the 2000 Jubilee year and the English translation that began in 2003 is nearly complete. The US Conference of Catholic Bishops have created a new website to introduce you to the new translation including an introductory video by Bishop Arthur J. Seratelli:

http://www.usccb.org/romanmissal/

Here's an example of the changes to the Confiteor:

PRESENT:
I confess to almighty God,
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have sinned
through my own fault,

in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done,
and in what I have failed to do; and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin,
all the angels and saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord, our God.

NEW:
I confess to almighty God
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have greatly sinned
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done
and in what I have failed to do,
through my fault, through my fault,
through my most grievous fault;
therefore
I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,
all the Angels and Saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord our God.

You will recognize the part where you strike your breast "through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault;" as being accurately translated from the original Latin mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa as used in the Tridentine or Latin Mass.

Here you can read examples of some of the changes:

http://www.usccb.org/romanmissal/examples.shtml

This promises to be a more accurate and authentic translation from the Latin text and will provide a much deeper meaning to the whole Mass. Check out the new website, the new examples and translations and let me know what you think!

(Personally, I think we should revive the Latin mass worldwide and communion should be taken on the knee, but that's just me!)

I totally agree, that is why sometimes I prefer, watching the mass on EWTN from Alabama as opposed to going to my parish, with Latin througout...to me it feels more real, authentic and puts me, at least, closer to God from an historical viewpoint.

Bob, you might be interested to know about a book I've written on this new English translation. See www.PrayingTheMass.com for details. I'll be on the Son Rise Morning Show tomorrow (Thursday, Oct 15) at 7:10 AM to talk about it.

You may have noticed that that's not really just you! Deo gratias for the Motu Proprio making the Extraordinary form of the Mass more widely available, and encouraging reform of the Ordinary form.

Truly as a Catholic if you believe in transubstantiation, then one should go down on his knees & receive holy communion from a priest only

Hello:
Oh Please, don't preach to me about getting on one's knees to receive Holy Communion from a priest only. At the rate we are going, you're very conservative views are pushing life long Catholics out the door. Our priests are all getting old and we are not getting priests in the numbers we need. Lay people should have a larger role within the church and women should be allowed a more active role. Bury the old school conservative views.
Sore Knees!

WOW! Sounds like Nancy Pelosi commended on my very own blog! Nah, I'll stick with the sacred traditions and remain obedient to the church. I guess that if holding to the true traditions of the faith are enough to push so called "life long Catholics" out the door, they weren't very Catholic to begin with and if that's all it took to push them out of the body of Christ, it isn't Christ they believe in, but themselves. Good bye and good riddance. What a beautiful time of purification and winnowing! God's blessings and I'll pray for you.

I'd like to offer a lighter take on "pushing Catholics out the door". We have one Priest and a part-time Deacon for four Sunday Masses and an average of 1,000 weekly Parishioners. If we all waited for our poor overworked Priest the LINE would be out the door and the Mass would be two hours long! We NEED our Eucharistic Ministers!

Bob Cavalcante Jr. said...

Remember, this isn't some mere wafer or a symbol, but the actual blood and body of Jesus Christ Himself. This begs then the question; how long is too long to wait to personally receive our Lord and Savior in the Blessed Sacrament?

For all those concerned, here's the Vatican's OFFICIAL position from Archbishop Burke regarding Lay Eucharistic Ministers and explaining that while perhaps necessary, it is NOT a position nor a "right of the baptised".

God's Blessings!

Lay Eucharistic ministers not entitled to position, Archbishop Burke clarifies

your Gospel says:

Good bye and good riddance. What a beautiful time of purification and winnowing!

our Lord's gospel says:

Tell me. Suppose a man has a humdred sheep and one of them strays; will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hillside and go in search of the stray? In truth I tell you, if he finds it, it gives him more joy than do the ninety-nine that did not stray at all. Similarly, it is never the will of your Father in heqven that one of these little ones should be lost.

"Anonymous", is this you again?

Where to begin. First, it isn't my "gospel", merely my opinion so you mistakely presume wrong and are not judging righteously. (Matt 7:2) Isn't that a little like bearing false witness? That whole plank in the eye thing ring a bell?

Second, there is a HUGE difference between "lost" and intentionally leaving. One is innocent, the other a sin.

Third, how can you justify your statement in light of Matthew 25:31-46? Did not Christ cast into Hell those who rejected Him? Not the lost sheep mind you, but those who failed to learn the lessons or intentionally rejected him? Think about it before you reply.

Also, there is only one "theotokos" and that is our Blessed Mother. Unless you are she, your handle is offensive.

God's Blessings, Bob

No, I am not anonymous.

Maybe not your gospel just what you preach and celebrate instead of the gospel.

A lost sheep is one that has wandered away from the flock(intentionally leaving) don't be intentionally dense to avoid the truth.

Wht you need to consider is that the folks leaving the Catholic sect of Christianity are not rejecting Christ they are rejecting you! As Gahndi would say they like christ they just dont like christians becasue they are not much like Christ.

My handle is merely the literal interpretation of my christian name of Christopher. I use it as a reminder of the witness to Christ's love that I should always strive for - and repent for when my sinfulness leads me astry

Bob Cavalcante Jr. said...

Again, you mistakenly presume that you know exactly what I preach and celebrate now? With those kinds of powers of discernment, I'm sure you're using them for good and not evil, right?

It seems to me that since you can't dispute the message, you target the messenger. Very poor discussion form indeed and just plain rude.

I'm not perfect, neither are you. Not every word from my mouth is gospel but the gospel is just one source of our faith, Sacred Tradition and the teaching authority handed down from Christ to His apostles are the others.

I didn't realize that Catholics are leaving all because of me! What would you suggest I do then? Last I checked, the Catholic Church is at 1.15 billion and steadily increasing. Let's not forget there isn't one single "protestant" church, each individual church is answerable only to itself. Likely over 300k houses divided. It's a Protestant thing to leave one church and join another because you don't agree with the pastor. Why? Because the pastor isn't preaching the gospel, but his own ill formed and uninspired opinion of it with no guidance from the Holy Spirit.

Have you bothered to read all my posts here or are you only picking a topic you consider to be an easy target?

Does a sheep truly know it is leaving out on it's own, rejecting the flock? Not just mindlessly wandering grazing and looking for greener pastures? How do you know without any doubt that is the absolute case every single time a sheep is lost? Please cite your sources.

And you conveniently avoided answering my questions regarding the goats adn the sheep. Anyone that rejects Christ or the Catholic Church because they don't like one person's passion for it is a fool of the greatest magnitude. You don't know me, don't know how I worship and have no idea what I've experienced in my life other than that which I publish so please, stop bearing false witness and answer the questions I posed, if you can.

You don't have to agree with me and my blog is not a place for you or anyone to attempt to tear me or my faith down, it can't and won't work. It strengthens me, in fact.

Please engage in meaningful discussion and refrain from the character assasinations.

P.S. Have you heard about the mass exodus of Christians leaving the unsound doctrines of the Anglican Church of England and reunifying back to Rome? Such a blessing, isn't it?

I'll pray for you.
God's Blessings,
Bob

This started with your words "good bye and good riddance" That's the message i am disputing and, I believe, showing to be incompatible with the Gospel of Christ. I am trying very hard to keep this discussion focused on that issue and avoiding attacking you.

I have trouble understanding "good bye and good riddance" being directed at someone made in the image and likeness of God. Those types of comments make the Catholic Church a less welcoming place for those looking for God's love. As for churches, there is 1 Christian Church that is led by Our Lord through the Holy Spirit.

I came across your blog while searching for an online pDF version of the 3rd edition of the Roman Missal. I don't consider your view point an easy target, rather it's a message that I fell compelled to speak out against becasue I feel that it will seperate people from the love of our Creator.

There are people leaving the Cathollic Church becasue they feel rejected and unwanted by it. Sometimes they are kicked out. They do not reject Christ and the Catholic Church, they feel rejected by it and seek a faith community that wil love them as Christ loves them. This is a source of significant pain for me because I feel that we Catholics, conservate or Liberal, should always continue to love just as Jesus continues to love us regardles of our sins.

How have I born false witness against you? I don't believe that I have. I have been attempting to help you grow your faith by becoming a more loving person, helping you see and understand how some of your words on this page have hurt me. I really don't believe that you intended to hurt but you have.

As you continue to follow God's calling into the Deaconate I pray that you will become more aware of how your opinions can hurt your flock.

Go in Peace,
Christopher

Christopher,

Thank you for a meaningful reply. I understand what you're saying but it remains a true statement nonetheless. When Christ sends the goats to eternal suffering it will be beautiful. Not in a morbid sadistic sense, but in reflection on a God who is JUST. Nothing Christ does can be construed as ugly, it is the will of God. If we disagree with it, it isn't Christ that is flawed, rather our own selves.

I know many friends that call themselves Catholic that are no more Catholic than my cat. They are scandalous adulterers, drunkards, believe in abortion and many other things. If one of these comes home, surely Christ will rejoice and kill the fatted calf! But if they don't, it is through their own failings, not God's and certainly not mine.

You bore false witness when you said I celebrate my own gospel and that people are leaving the Church because of me. I very seriously doubt that. I've already forgive you.

Regarding Love, I've written quite a bit about Love on this blog and have so much more to come. Have you read any of those articles? You might find a bit deeper meaning of what I believe Love is and what it isn't and subsequently understand me and my postings a bit more.

Quid est Caritas? What is Love? Is it that warm huggy liberal happy feeling, or is it so strong that Abraham was willing to sacrifice Issiac for God's will; so strong that God sent His only Son to His passion and crucifixion?

Verily I say unto thee, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Many made in the image and likeness of God will suffer eternity in the fires of Hell for the choices each of they have made. That's not my gospel, but Christ's. Jesus came not to unite, but to divide and that means the faithful from the shallow even if it means father from son, mother from daughter. Did he not also tell the apostles to go and preach and heal in his name, taking only what is given them? "If any town will not welcome you or listen to you, you shake the dust from your feet as you leave to show you have abandoned the people to their fate." That, my friend, is certainly not in line with what you're saying and it is harsh, it is reality, it is most certainly Love and it is the Gospel truth. It is not our dust-formed bodies that are made in the image and likeness of God, but our spiritual bodies, our souls that are eternal.

We are not called to convert ANYONE, that is the work of the Holy Spirit alone. We sow seeds and if they fall on rocky soil, so be it. We're not farmers, we're seed sowers. Just sow more on better soil.

I would rather have one friend with pure faith in God and Christ through our Catholic Church than a thousand with weak faith. But that's just me. And I think that's what Christ wants too.

I sincerely wish you peace and all of God's blessings this Advent.
